The Great Northern F7A, F7B and the F7C units sported the very popular Great Northern Orange and Green made famous by the "Empire Builder." The "Empire Builder" ran from Chicago to St. Paul/Minneapolis via the Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR and then via the Great Northern Railway to Seattle along the northern tier of states through the Cascade mountain range and through the Cascade tunnel and Glacier National Park in Montana.
In Spokane, a section of the train went on to Portland via the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway. Head end power consisted of 3 locomotives as an A-B-A combination. There were other trains these cars could be used on that were operated by the Great Northern such as the "Internationals" between Seattle and Vancouver, "Western Star" between Chicago and Seattle, "Dakotan" the "Winnipeg Limited" and others.
