Production of the SD70MAC began in 1993 as a competitor to the AC4400CW. Over the years more than 1000 units were produced. Today, the Alaska Railroad continues to operate SD70MAC locomotives as its most prevalent engine, owning and operating 28 active engines that it uses to pull tourist and commuter trains on routes stretching from Seward up to Fairbanks.
